Divvie App

For this project, I challenged myself to a 5-day design sprint to create Divvie, a cooking app designed with neurodivergent individuals in mind—though its features can benefit anyone.

What is Divvie?

Divvie is an app that addresses the often-overwhelming process of preparing meals by helping users organize and pace cooking tasks, ensuring every dish is ready on time.

If you're cooking with a partner, the app efficiently divides tasks to make collaboration seamless. With customizable settings to enhance focus, Divvie aims to make the kitchen a more inclusive and stress-free space for everyone.

Design Goals

  • Reduce distracting content when possible, presenting one step at a time.

  • Engage users through clean design, clear language, and an intuitive structure.

  • Include customizable settings and alerts to help users stay organized as needed.

  • Organize tasks effectively for users who may feel overwhelmed by multi-step processes.

  • Enable seamless task-sharing between multiple people without adding unnecessary distractions.

Day 1: Initial Concept

The inspiration for this app came from my own challenges in the kitchen, as well as observations of the women in my family.

Personally, I often struggle to organize multiple recipes into an efficient, time-saving cooking plan. I also thought of my mother and aunt cooking together. While they’re both excellent cooks on their own, their excitement about spending time together often leads to distractions—they almost always forget a step when cooking together.

This app was born from real experiences and designed with inattentive ADHD’ers in mind—for people like us who need a little extra structure and focus in places like busy kitchens.

Day 2: Brand Development

By the second day, I decided to name the app Divvy, but upon discovering that the name was already in use, I explored alternative spellings. I landed on Divvie, which I loved for its almost-palindromic quality and playful feel.

While searching for color inspiration, I was drawn to the juicy color of cherries. The lowercase “d” in a sans-serif font reminded me of a single cherry, and the concept of “divvying” a pair of cherries perfectly aligned with the app’s purpose. I wrapped up the day refining the logo design and building a cohesive color library in Figma.

Day 3 - 5: Systems, Wireframes, and Polish

Next, I created basic components and variants to ensure consistency and efficiency as I moved forward. Once these elements were in place, I identified the key screens the app would require.

With the groundwork laid, I dove headfirst into designing the app. Given the fast-paced nature of this 5-day challenge, I made real-time updates as I progressed, refining designs on the fly while maintaining focus on delivering a cohesive and functional user experience within the limited timeframe. The final day, I went back through and made any last adjustments and resolved comments I had left myself along the way.

Result

After five intense days of hard work, I’m incredibly proud to have created something meaningful. In the future, I plan to gather feedback on this concept to refine and improve it further. I also hope to develop additional prototypes to showcase its potential. Stay tuned—there’s more to come!
