Next-Gen Vehicle Design System for General Motors

I had the privilege of playing a key role on the Design System team during the complete overhaul of GM’s vehicle Design System across all brands. This experience was instrumental in developing my skills and deepening my understanding of scalable Design Systems.

Guidelines, Prototypes, and More

My work on the Design System team included:

  • Migrating and improving previous guidelines over to the next-gen Design System using ZeroHeight

  • Designing prototypes to showcase the functionality of the 36 components within GM’s vehicle design system

  • Competitive benchmarking

  • Leading technical discussions to resolve complex issues

  • Pushing updates using Git and VS code

  • Creating feedback loops between our DS team and the other designers in our department

Accessibility Standards

While working on the Design System team, I also maintained my status as the In-Vehicle Digital Accessibility Specialist. My work during this time included:

  • Developing 46 automotive-specific accessibility standards based on WCAG 2.2

  • Establishing 12 design principles

  • Ensuring all of our DS components met aforementioned accessibility standards and principles

  • Identifying CVAA compliance risks, resulting in potentially saving the company from millions of dollars in fines

  • Acting as a key contributor on GM’s next-gen token/theming strategy, ensuring accessibility measures were enforced before production began

  • Building new accessibility annotation processes for our department, including the use of Stark and Figma
