Passenger Accessibility for General Motors

As the In-Vehicle Digital Accessibility & Inclusive Design Specialist for GM, one of my responsibilities was to identify gaps, propose solutions, and perform outreach for our compliance to the CVAA. One particular area of focus was the Video Voice Over feature in passenger displays.

New Processes

Video Voice Over is a text-to-speech feature that facilitates the use of streaming services for people who use screen readers. I pioneered new processes to ensure our feature aligns with the needs of our customers, including:

  • Employing user testing with legally blind participants to identify barriers in our existing screen reading implementation

  • Annual domain audits and documentation

  • Creating and performing CVAA training for all designers

Remediation Strategies

I anticipated and escalated barriers, proposed prioritized solutions, and worked cross-functionally to remediate gaps, both short and long-term.

The gaps I found during the year I was tasked with CVAA compliance could prevent GM from accruing short-term fines of up to 1 Million dollars a day, as well as long-term costs of remediating issues at the end of the design lifecycle (which can add up to 30x the cost of implementing from the beginning) for upcoming features.
